Low river levels

October 17, 2020

This is the Mekong where it flows between Nong Khai, Thailand and Vientiane, Lao PDR. As you can see, the water levels have fallen to expose the rocky rapids that are usually below the surface. This is happening during the regular monsoon season, when rains usually swell the river to rush high over these rocks.

If these are conditions during the rains, what will the dry season hold?

Thanks to our colleagues at Mekong Voice for allowing us to re-post their photo of 14 October. You can catch their regular river updates in Thai on their Facebook page, here.
